87. Edwin Starr:"War".

La guerre du Vietnam est le premier conflit au cours duquel les Afro-Américains combattent dans les mêmes unités que les Blancs. Aussi, les artistes afro-américains s'intéressent de très au bourbier vietnamien dans lequel les Etats-Unis s'embourbent progressivement. Edwin Starr (1) voit aussi dans cet enlisement au Vietnam, un bon moyen pour faire lanterner les Noirs en pleine lutte contre les discriminations raciales.

Le titre "War" reste le plus grand hit de la carrière d'Edwin Starr. Cette chanson de protestation, qui dénonce l'enlisement américain au Vietnam, sort en 1970, peu de temps après la version originale des Temptations. L'interprétation poignante de Starr confère au morceau une grande force. Les auditeurs ne s'y trompent pas puisque sa version reste trois semaines (29 août, 5 et 12 septembre 1970) en tête du classement américain.

1. Edwin Starr constitue une des valeurs sûre de la Motown, le label de Berry Gordy qui propose une musique soul sophistiquée. Avec les premiers succès dans la lutte pour les droits civiques, Gordy finit par accepter d'enregistrer des morceaux engagés, bien loin des ballades romantiques habituelles.
